The traits that people cherish today have been a part of the Paso Fino heritage for over 500 years. The Paso Fino - the mount of the Spanish Conquistators - was first introduced by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage.

The history of the Paso Fino began in Spain when the Berber was bred with the Jennet, a smooth gaited horse, now extinct. These horses were then bred with the Andalusians to produce many of the horses brought to the New World by the Spanish conquistators. The remarkably comfortable smooth gait of the Jennet became the sought after trait in breeding. The result of this blend became known as the Paso Fino breed - Los Caballos de Paso Fino - the horse with the fine step.
